Growing A Healthy Church, Part 2

The Doctrine of Christ in Colossians:

  • Christ is the Creator (1:15-17, John 1:1-3) John 1:3, Col. 1:16 are very clear that Christ was Creator. The “trinity” is seen in creation in Genesis 1
  • Christ is the image of God (1:15) The image of God states that Christ was the real embodiment of God, where as the use of the word likeness is often used differently. Christ came in likeness of men (Philippians 2:7).  Adam was made in the image of God, after their (triune God) likeness Genesis 1:26-28
  • Christ presently holds the universe and has authority over all creation (1:16-17) (Christ calmed the sea – Matthew 8:23-27) it is by Christ’s power that that world is held together!
  • Christ is our redemption (1:14, 2:13-15) gives us forgiveness of our sins! We have confidence of our eternal inheritance!  He has forgiven you of all your trespasses!
  • Christ is over angels and all principalities (1:15-18) yet he made Himself a little lower than the angels to go to the cross for us (see Hebrews 2:5-10)
  • The fullness of God dwells in Christ (1:19, 2:9) – Every aspect of God’s power and righteousness dwells in Christ! He is God and has all the attribute of God!
  • By Christ we have reconciliation with God (1:20). Reconciliation = “the means by which sinners are reconciled and brought into a state of favor with God, after natural estrangement or enmity” – 1828 Webster’s

(The understanding of the word “if” in Col. 1:23 and 3:1 – The “if’ assumes that you are going to continue in the faith (1:23) or that you are risen with Christ (3:1).  It is as if Paul is saying, “I am sure that you will” in 1:23 and saying “since ye then be risen with Christ” in 3:1

.  It is not putting doubt in your position or your inheritance!)
  • Christ is the mystery of God revealed to us (1:27, 2:2, 4:3) God desires that all people will be saved (1 Tim. 2:4) and the way that will happen was Christ’s death on the cross. He was the mystery revealed!
  • We are complete in Christ (2:10) – you have everything that you need with Christ! See John 1:16-17
  • We are aligned with Christ (2:11-12) – we are spiritually circumcised and spiritually baptized (1 Cor. 12:13) with our belief in Christ. Water baptism is a public testimony of our belief in Christ (Acts 8:36-39)
  • He’s seated at the right hand of the Father (3:1)
  • We will meet Christ in the rapture (3:4) As a believer, we are saved from the wrath to come (tribulation) 1 Thes. 1:10 and will meet Christ in the air 1 Thes. 4:16-17.

What’s the point??

  • Hold to truth…not opinion, fables, or feelings! – (2:6-8)
  • Avoid doctrines that reject Christ – (2:8)
  • Set our affections on Christ (3:2)
  • Die to self (3:3-9)
  • Put on the new man (3:3-17)
