Growing A Healthy Church

The Church at Colosse – Colossians 1:1-8

  • The church was already doing good things:
    • They had faith in Jesus (1:4)
    • They had love for the saints (1:4)
    • They had a heavenly hope (1:5)
    • They had spiritual fruit (1:6)
    • They experienced the grace of God (1:6)
    • They had a missionary heart (1:7-8)

But, they could still grow!Colossians 1:9-12

  • Paul and the other pastors prayed that the church would:
  1. Be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding (9)
  2. That they would continue to walk worthy of the Lord (10)
  3. That they would be fruitful in every work (10)
  4. That they would increase in the knowledge of God (10)
  5. That they would be strengthened by God’s power to have patience and longsuffering with joyfulness (11)
  6. That they would be thankful for what God has given them/what he has in store for them (12)

Doctrine is important!

  • By definition, it is anything that is taught. Doctrine can be good or bad, depending on what is taught:
    • And he (Jesus) taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine.” – Mark 4:2
  • Biblical doctrine should be taught ASAP!
    • But thou (Timothy) hast fully known my (Paul) doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith….” – 2 Timothy 2:10
  • So that Christ’s doctrine can be spread!
    • “But speak thou (Titus) the things which become sound doctrine.”Titus 2:1
  • We need to be grounded in what we believe!
    • As I besought to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine.” 1 Timothy 1:3
    • “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” – 1 Timothy 4:13
    • “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” – 1 Timothy 4:16
  • False doctrine is all around us!
    • Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they shall not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” – 2 Timothy 4:2-4
  • Turning away from the truth!
    • Our world is plagued with false doctrine:

  • False doctrines specifically target the deity, supernatural acts and continual work of Jesus!

  • He is the head of the church!
  • All fullness dwells in Christ!
  • Through His cross/blood we have peace!
  • He has reconciled us to Himself!
  • He works in us and we should be grounded in the doctrine of Him to not be ashamed before Him!
