Growing a Healthy Church, Part 3

Should having a correct doctrine of Christ affect all aspects of our lives, especially our family?  _______)

Our (church) marriage to the groom (Jesus Christ) shows us how a marriage should be – Eph. 5:21-33

  1. Christ loved the church ( 5:25)
  2. Christ sacrificed for the church ( 5:25)
  3. Christ cleansed the church ( 5:26)

Our response to Christ’s work:

  1. Follow Christ’s Actions (imitate Him)
  • Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also have loved us, and given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” – Ephesians 5:1-2
  • “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:” – 1 Peter 2:21
  1. Submit to Christ (Ephesians 5:21-24)
  2. Submit to One another (Ephesians 5:21)
  3. Husbands – Love and sacrifice for your wife (Ephesians 5:25, 28-33)

“Our response” continued

  1. Wives – Reverence (honor and respect) your husband (Ephesians 5:33)

The new man into practice with our marriage – Colossians 3:12-21

  • The new man dictates that we …
    • Have mercy with one another!
    • That we are kind with one another!
    • That we are humble and meek (not weak)!
    • That we are patient with one another’s “issues”!
    • That we are ready to forgive (not hold the hurt against them).
    • That we will love our spouse – PUT ON charity! It’s not always easy to put action into our love!

How do we do this?

  • “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.”Colossians 3:10
  • “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” – Colossians 3:16 (Read the Word!!!)
  • Let the peace of God dwell in you! (Don’t be given over to drama!!) – Col. 3:15
  • Know that you are doing this for God (Focus on Christ) – Col. 3:17

Verses on Marriage

Hebrews 13:4 – Marriage [is] honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Genesis 2:24

2
And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made [them] at the beginning made them male and female,

5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except [it be] for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

1 Corinthians 7:39

 – The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
