Spiritual Warfare – Repentance

“(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” – 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

Repentance = Greek word “Metanoia” which means “to think differently”.  Your thinking changes your actions!

Jesus and repentance

  • “I (Jesus) came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”Luke 5:32
  • “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” – Matthew 4:17

Repentance is a gift

  • “Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.Acts 5:31
  • “When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.”Acts 11:18

God’s Goodness in repentance

  • Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?”Romans 2:4
  • “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”2 Peter 3:9
  • “I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.”Luke 15:7

Repentance brings refreshing

  • “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”Acts 3:19

Flee and Repent

  • Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” – 2 Timothy 2:22-26

 

Everyone should repent

  • “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:”Acts 17:30

Repentance looks like…

  1. We see our sin for the grossness that it is – Psalm 51
  2. We have sorrow of our sin
  • . For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” 2 Corinthians 7:10
  1. We take ownership of our sin (confess it) – Ps 51:1-6
  2. We feel the shame of our sin
  • The opposite of shame – Ezra 9:6, Jeremiah 6:15
  1. We hate our sin “our sin should disgust us” – Acts 9
  2. We turn from our sin
  • Ezekiel 14:6 – “…repent, and turn yourselves from your idols…”
  • Ezekiel 18:30 – “…Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions…”
  • Ezekiel 33:11“…but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways,…”
  • Acts 26:20 – “…repent and turn to God, and do the works of repentance.”

It’s time to repent!

  • Hosea 10:12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow (untilled) ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.”

Everyone should repent
