That’s Life

The Life of Job – Job 1-3

  • Job lived a complete life. He followed God, loved and provided for his family. He prayed for them
    • Perfect = complete, Upright = morally right
  • Anytime that you are a “standout” for God, the devil takes notice/wants to destroy you (Jn 10:10)

Where do our problems come from?

  1. Our Fallen world! (Genesis 3)
    1. The world was created in perfection but all that’s of the world now is the lust of the flesh, eyes and pride of life (1 Jn 2:15-17)
  2. The devil!
    1. He’s a thief (John 10:10) a liar (John 8:44)
    2. His purpose is to devour (1 Peter 5:8)
  3. Your own doing!
    1. Don’t blame everything on the world and devil – take responsibility where it applies!
    2. How does our mind play into this? Do the things that we focus on come to real life?
      1. Read Job’s words in Job 3:25, “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.”
      2. Living in fear is the opposite of living in God’s love – 1 John 4:16-18

The Emotional Toll of problems!

  1. Bitterness – Job’s wife (Job 2:9-10) and how she handled the devastation
    1. Bitterness is worse than anger. We should never let the root of bitterness grow – it’s affects are devastating (see 12:14-15)
  2. Depression – Job 3:20-26 (also see 1 Kings 19 about Elijah’s depression)
  3. Loneliness – Job and his wife had to feel lonely!
    1. The truth is that even if we have people around us there is a loneliness that we all can feel. This is why it’s important to make our relationship with God our most important!  He never leaves us ( 13:5)

How to handle the problems of life?

  1. The proper mindset is the key!
    1. Job’s response to tragedy in Job 1:20-22
    2. What we focus our mind on will determine our response to problems – Phil 4:4-8
  2. Get help! Don’t go it alone!
    1. Job’s 3 friends – Job 2:11-13
      1. Even though Job was the “greatest in the east”, it seems that he only had 3 close friends! Is this normal?
    2. The Brick Layers Story
  3. Trust God! He’s been around a long time! Job 38
  4. Repent if needed

Be faithful, even in tough times and God will bless you – Job 42:12-17
